The Hitler Jewish Ancestry Narrative: Historiography, Origins, and Political Dissemination

This paper is based on a chapter from the unpublished manuscript of Larysa Karaliova, a project initiated in 2011 following discussions with former French President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, who encouraged the preparation of a broader work on American and European history and policy. The immediate impetus for the present study was the renewed international attention attracted by a statement made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in an interview with the Italian television program Zona Bianca on 1 May 2022 concerning the claim that Adolf Hitler had Jewish ancestry. The international controversy surrounding these remarks was followed by differing official reactions. The President of the Russian Federation later apologized to the President of Israel for the diplomatic controversy generated by the statement. Lavrov subsequently received the Order of the Stallion, the highest state distinction of Burkina Faso. These events form part of the broader historical and political context within which the present study examines the evolution of this historical narrative. Rather than addressing the political controversy itself, the paper investigates the historical background of this narrative, tracing its appearance in wartime propaganda, later historiography, and modern public discourse. The analysis is based on published historical studies, documentary sources, genealogical investigations, and selected publications in genetics. Particular attention is given to the distinction between documented historical evidence and unsubstantiated claims, as well as to the role of mass media in transmitting, amplifying, and perpetuating controversial historical narratives which were used as propaganda during the Second World War. The paper also discusses the conceptual distinction between the terms antisemitism and Judeophobia, explaining the terminology adopted by the authors within the historical context of the study. The objective of the present study is not to promote a political interpretation but to examine how historical claims emerge, evolve, and influence public understanding of the past.
