Soviet Religious Policy in Transcarpathia (Western Ukraine), 1944-1989

This article examines Soviet religious policy in Transcarpathia from the establishment of Soviet rule in 1944-1946 to the restoration of the legal rights of the Greek Catholic Church in 1989. Drawing on archival documents from the Transcarpathian Regional State Archives (TRSA), the Archives of the Transcarpathian Reformed Diocese (ATRD), the Central State Archive of the Highest Authorities and Administration of Ukraine (CSAHAAU), and the István Bendász Greek Catholic Library and Archives (BIGKKL), the study analyzes the legal, administrative, ideological, and coercive instruments used to restrict religious life. It traces the separation of church and state, the nationalization of ecclesiastical property and denominational schools, restrictions on religious education, anti-religious propaganda, surveillance of clergy and believers, and the bureaucratic control of congregations. Particular attention is devoted to the Greek Catholic Eparchy of Mukachevo, the policy of “reunification” with the Russian Orthodox Church, the arrests and deportations of clergy, the liquidation of the eparchy in 1949, and the subsequent underground existence of the church. The evidence shows that Soviet policy combined institutional exclusion, material dispossession, ideological pressure, surveillance, and repression, while religious communities continued to preserve confessional practice under increasingly restricted and, in the Greek Catholic case, clandestine conditions.
