China is one of the countries with the longest history in the world. The protection and development of historical and cultural resources is an issue worthy of attention in the fields of economic geography and urban-rural planning at the present stage. This study takes the Zhongyuan Urban Agglomeration, which is rich in historical and cultural heritage, as a specific case, analyzes the characteristics of the spatial-temporal distribution pattern of its historical and cultural resources. The results show that the distribution structure of historical and cultural element resources within the Zhongyuan Urban Agglomeration presents significant regional agglomeration and combination characteristics. In response to the analysis results, the study formulates an optimization strategy for the regional development pattern supported by the protection and development of historical and cultural resources, and initially proposes a matching spatial development pattern plan and policy recommendations for coordinated development.
