ABSTRACT

Chinese incense culture represents a distillation of historical practices and artistic traditions surrounding the use of aromatic materials. As incense becomes increasingly integrated into contemporary households, its multifaceted significance warrants scholarly exploration. This paper traces the historical evolution of Chinese incense culture—from ancient rituals to its zenith in the Song Dynasty—and examines its modern-day relevance. We identify cultural preservation, health and wellness applications, socioeconomic impacts, and philosophical enrichment as key domains where incense culture exerts positive effects. Findings underscore its role in enhancing life aesthetics, promoting mental well-being, supporting rural economies, and bridging tradition with modernity. The study advocates for further interdisciplinary research to address challenges in heritage conservation and sustainable innovation.
