ABSTRACT
The
instrumental music classroom, commonly called “the band” is comprised of
students from all parts of a school population. Some may think or assume that
band students are inherently engaged. However, engagement strategies to reach
all students need to be reviewed, revisited, and modified, even in the
ensemble-based class. Action steps to engage more students more often should be
employed in the music room, modified as necessary, which means it is important
to know what engagement in a classroom really means. Engagement is a changing
state of being and is affected by different variables.
